NBA Over/Under Regular Season Wins
Philadelphia 76ers - 48.5 wins
October 22, 2023
The Case for the Over

They won 54 games last season, with the differential of a 51-win team, and at least for the moment have a similar team returning. They are talented enough that Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey could carry them to 50-wins. Bringing in Kelly Oubre could give them some additional scoring off the bench, and Danny Green is a veteran that should be able to make shots and make the right plays on both ends.
Daryl Morey could eventually get a significant return for James Harden, like he when he acquired Harden when the team was in a similar position with Ben Simmons.
Although opinions on him started to sour near the end of his tenure in Toronto, Nick Nurse is still known as a top coach in the league and should be an upgrade from Doc Rivers.

The Case for the Under
There’s just a lot of uncertainty around this team, starting with Harden. While there’s a chance that the Harden situation could resolve favorably for the 76ers, there isn’t a clear path at the moment that brings back a player as good as Harden.
If Maxey or Embiid miss significant time, they could be screwed offensively. That’s true of any team with their best players, but the 76ers are particularly lacking in replicability of their best players, as they just don’t have a ton of offensive creation on their team outside of those two.

Conclusion

There’s just too much turmoil around this team for me to go over on this win total. I wouldn’t be surprised if they won 50 games, because I believe in Nurse and how good Embiid is, but there’s just too much down-side risk here.
