2025 Free Agents - Guershon Yabusele

Yabusele was a mid-1st round pick in 2016, getting drafted 16th overall. When he eventually signed with the Celtics in 2017, he had a rough start to his career. He couldn't get consistent time, playing in just over 350 minutes of non-garbage time across his first two seasons, according to Cleaning the Glass. He was waived by the Celtics in 2019, and played overseas in Europe until his performance in the 2024 Olympics earned him a contract with the 76ers. Yabusele has a big body and uses his strength to get to the rim and finish. He has gotten a little more lean compared to when he was previously in the NBA, but still has a bigger frame. Yabusele wasn't really a shooter during his first stint in the NBA. He hit over 38% of his 3-pointers, but the sample size was really small and overall he just didn't have that skillset. That has changed now though, as Yabusele has upped his volume and hit 43% of his 3-pointers over the past 3 years overseas, hit 39% from 3 in '24-'25 for Philadelphia on about four attempts per game. Defensively, Yabusele can use his strength as an advantage, and can move decently well to stay in front of wings. He doesn't have the length, vertical ability, or overall awareness to be a rim protector, but he has the potential to be solid on that end. He posted a solid steal rate in '24-'25. Yabusele will be 29 years old as a free agent in 2025. The 76ers had a disaster of a '24-'25 season, but Yabusele's play was a lone bright spot, and the 76ers may need to get off of some current contracts in order to have the Taxpayer MLE available to re-sign him.

Summary

Yabusele will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2.3 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the 76ers could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $3 million. This might be enough to retain Yabusele, since he settled for the minimum to come to Philadelphia. Alternatively, the 76ers could use their Mid-Level Exception or Bi-Annual Exception (if available) to re-sign Yabusele if he demands more than $3 million.  Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Yabusele as even teams without cap space could possibly use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him.

Cap Considerations

Precious Achiuwa (1 year, $6 million, 2024) Torrey Craig (1+1 year minimum, 2023) Kenneth Lofton Jr. (1 year minimum, non-guaranteed, 2024)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: 76ers, Heat, Kings, Suns, Hawks

Predicted Contract: 2-year, $11.7 million (2nd year player option) with the 76ers

Actual Contract: 2-year, $11.7 million (2nd year player option) with the Knicks

Yabusele got the exact contract that I projected, but signed with New York instead of staying in Philadelphia.
