2025 Free Agents - Drew Timme
After an illustruous college career at Gonzaga, Timme went undrafted in 2023 and spent the '23-'24 season in the G-League. His second season in the G-League went well, as he averaged nearly 24 points per game and over 10 rebounds, and that earned him a standard contract with the Nets near the end of the '24-'25 season. Despite having some real feel for the game and some ball skills, TImme is undersized for a center at just 6'9", and his athletic limitations make him a target defensively. There's a chance he figures it out by being crafty enough to be efficient inside as a scorer, along with using his playmaking ability to faciliate from the elbows or find his teammates when he catches the ball as the roll man in pick-and-roll. Timme will already be almost 25 years old as a potential free agent in 2025. He got some NBA minutes down the stretch of the '24-'25 season, but that was on a tanking Nets team, so he still needs to prove he belongs in the NBA.
Summary
Timme has a $2 million team option for '25-'26, and if that is declined he will be a restricted free agent with a $2.2 million cap hold and Qualifying Offer, and the Nets will have his Non-Bird rights. There's also a chance that the Nets do not give Timme a QO, which would make him an unrestricted free agent. If the Nets re-sign Timme using the Non-Bird Exception, they could offer him a starting salary of up to 120% of his minimum salary, which should be more than enough to retain him. If it weren't, and they wanted to retain him, they would simply exercise his option anyway. Since Timme will only have one year of service, he will be subject to the Gilbert Arenas provision if he is given a QO. This means that any offer sheet he signs with a team besides Brooklyn can have a starting maximum salary of $14.1Â million, but the third and potentially fourth years of that contract can have a large jump (up to the max). His cap hit would then be the average salary over the life of the contract. Since the Nets would only have his Non-Bird Rights, they would not be able to match an offer sheet above the amount they can give him using the Non-Bird Exception. Realistically, the Arenas provision will not come into play for Timme, as any offers for him would fit within the full Non-Taxpayer MLE over the length of the contract. It's most likely that he's an unrestricted free agent with only minimum offers, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers. He is also still two-way eligible.
Cap Considerations
Terry Taylor (1 year non-guaranteed minimum, 2024) Luke Garza (2-1 year minimum, 2024) Kenneth Lofton Jr. (1 year non-guaranteed minimum, 2024)
