2025 Free Agents - Tristan Thompson
Thompson's main skill is rebounding, particularly on the offensive end. He is still one of the better offensive rebounders in the league, as was in the top 10th percentile in offensive rebounding rate each season from '14-'15 to '21-'22, according to Cleaning the Glass. He has never finished all that well at the rim, and he's a poor free throw shooter at 60% for his career, but he does have a somewhat reliable hook shot and floater that he can go to with either hand. Thompson has lost a step athletically as he has entered his thirties, so he's not as effective switching out onto the perimeter or defending in space, but he isn't a complete liability in that regard like some centers. He doesn't provide much rim protection for a center though. Thompson went most of the '22-'23 season unsigned before joining the Lakers shortly before the playoffs. He actually did get some brief playoffs at times the last couple seasons, and was a decent backup or third center for the Cavaliers in '23-'24 when they dealt with injuries, but those players often don't get more than the minimum these days. He barely played at all in '24-'25, so his NBA career is hanging on by a thread.
Summary
Thompson will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2.3 million cap hold and Early Bird Rights. Using his Early Bird Rights, the Cavaliers could offer him a starting salary of about $13.5 million, which should be more than enough to re-sign him. Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Thompson as even teams without cap space could possibly use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Thompson only gets minimum offers, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Cap Considerations
Bismack Biyombo (1 year non-guaranteed minimum, 2024) DeAndre Jordan (1 year minimum, 2024) Mason Plumlee (1 year minimum, 2024)
