2025 Free Agents - Jae'Sean Tate
Tate was an overseas veteran that came to the NBA in 2020 and has provided nice play for the Rockets, despite them winning very few games over his first three seasons. Tate's minutes have declined each season as the Rockets have added talent through their rebuild, but he is still a regular part of the rotation. Tate rebounds well on the offensive end, is a solid multi-positional defender, and overall just makes winning plays on both ends. Tate could improve his outside shot, as he's only a 31% three-point shooter, and defenses tend to be fine with leaving him open. He has finished well enough at the rim to make him a fairly efficient offensive player. He's very left-hand dominant, and if his recent struggles are due to teams keying into that more, that could be an issue going forward. There's little doubt in my mind that Tate can be a solid role player, but I'm not sure how much more than that he can be. His lack of outside shooting ability could be a problem in the playoffs, as teams may just ignore him, but at worst Tate should be able to provide value in the regular season. Tate will be almost 30 years old as a free agent in 2025, so this might be his best chance at one last decent contract.
Summary
Tate will be an unrestricted free agent with a $13.5 million cap hold and full Bird Rights, meaning the Rockets will have no restrictions on re-signing him. Since his cap hold is high enough to be near or above his starting salary, it's unlikely his cap hold will really matter, as it will either be replaced by his starting salary after he re-signs, or removed when he signs with another team. For other teams, if Tate demands a starting salary of more than the full $14.1 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him, unless a sign-and-trade is worked out. However, it's likely that Tate could be had for the full MLE or slightly less, including possibly the $5.7 million Taxpayer MLE, which would make him available to almost every team.
