2025 Free Agents - De'Anthony Melton

Melton had success with the Grizzlies early in his career, being a part of one of the best bench mobs in the league. It seemed like no matter who was injured for the Grizzlies over the past few years, they still managed to keep winning because they had so many guys that could contribute on any given night, and Melton was a big part of that. He's a solid two-way wing that also fit nicely in Philadelphia when healthy. Melton is a "3-and-D" wing, but he has more to his game than that. He's not just a stand-still spot-up shooter, as he has quickened his release and can come off screens and shoot on the move. He also has some off-the-dribble game, and isn't afraid to launch step-back jumpers or pull up from three in transition or semi-transition. Melton is a 37% 3-point shooter for his career, and has hit 39% over the last four seasons. He can score at all levels, as he has some touch on floaters and has nice footwork on drives to finish with eurosteps either in halfcourt or transition. Every once in a while he'll break out an athletic finish above the rim. He has some passing vision to find teammates off drives.  His 46% career 2-point percentage is below average, and it hurts his efficiency. However, over the past four seasons Melton has taken fewer twos, taking a majority of his attempts from three after only taking about a third of his attempts from three early in his career. Melton didn't have the best playoffs in 2022 for Memphis, as his minutes decreased and he was sometimes pushed back in the rotation to guys he was previously ahead of, such as John Konchar. He shot better in the 2023 playoffs, hitting 37% from three, but struggled from two. Unfortunately, he missed the majority of '23-'24 due to injury, and was never able to fully get back in time for the playoffs. Defensively, Melton is a solid on-ball defender, as he moves his feet well and fights over screens. He can also provide value as a help-side defender, as he has good anticipation and knows his rotations. He has consistently put up elite steal and block rates for his position, never finishing worse than the 93rd percentile in steal rate or 85th percentile in block rate other than '23-'24, according to Cleaning the Glass. He also rebounds well on both ends of the court. Melton will be 27 years old as a free agent in 2025, and will hope to have a healthy bounce-back year to potentially get another chance at a big long-term contract before he starts to age out of his prime.

Summary

Melton will be an unrestricted free agent with a $15.4 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Warriors could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $15.4 million. If Melton's starting salary is above the $14.1 million Nontaxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him. It's possible he could be had for the full MLE or slightly less, including maybe the $8.8 million Room MLE, the $5.7 million Taxpayer MLE, or $5.1 million Bi-Annual Exception if he continues to struggle with his health.

Cap Considerations

Donte DiVincenzo (4 years, $50 million, 2023) Marcus Smart (4 years, $77 million, 2021) Gabe Vincent (3 years, $33 million, 2023)
