2025 Free Agents - Doug McDermott

McDermott's value is as a shooter. He can hit tough on-the-move 3s coming off screens, and that gravity can open up space for his teammates. He has shot over 39% from 3 for each of the last eight seasons, and does so on high volume, including some pretty difficult attempts. He's a below-average 2-point shooter, especially in recent seasons, but he knows that and takes the vast majority of his attempts from 3. He's not someone who you will put the ball in his hands, but he can attack hard closeouts or take a couple dribbles after coming off a screen and catching. McDermott is below-average on defense, mainly due to his lack of quickness and laterally mobility, but at least has enough size to battle with some of the bigger strong wings. He isn't a defensive playmaker at all, as he has been at the bottom of the league in steal rate for essentially his entire career. He also doesn't rebound at all on either side of the ball.  McDermott will be 33 years old as a free agent in 2025 and has shown some regression in recent years. However, as long as he can hit shots at a high level, he might be able to stick around in the NBA. The Kings signed him to a partially-guaranteed contract very late in free agency in 2024, so it didn't seem like he had much interest from other teams, and he didn't get that much playing time in '24-'25 to help his cause.

Summary

McDermott will be an unrestricted free agent with a $2.3 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Kings could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $4.4 million. This should be enough to retain McDermott, as he has only received minimum contracts in recent years. Other teams will have multiple ways to sign McDermott as even teams without cap space could possibly use the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Taxpayer MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that McDermott only gets minimum offers, and he may not get fully-guaranteed offers.

Cap Considerations

Landry Shamet (1 year minimum, non-guaranteed, 2024) Damion Lee (1 year minimum, 2024) Svi Mykhailiuk (4-3 years, $15 million, 2024)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: Kings, Magic, Thunder, Pelicans, Raptors

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $3.6 million (non-guaranteed) with the Kings

Actual Contract: 1-year, $3.6 million ($2.3 million cap hit) with the Kings

McDermott was able to extend his NBA career another year, signing a minimum contract with Sacramento.
