2025 Free Agents - Ty Jerome

Jerome came into the league as an accomplished point guard that won a championship with Virginia in 2019 . As a late first round pick in 2019, there were hopes that Jerome could develop into a high-level backup point guard, if not a starter. Jerome struggled throughout his first early seasons in the league, but had a breakout '24-'25 season with the Cavaliers, being a regular part of the rotation on a team that won 64 games. Jerome has shown an improved ability to create separation off the dribble, and hit shots at a high level in '24-'25. He can make plays out of pick-and-roll, and can hit pullup midrange jumpers at an elite rate, as the 58% he shot from midrange was the top of the league for his position, according to Cleaning the Glass. That includes the floater area, where Jerome has become particularly deadly. He also hit a whopping 45% from three in '24-'25. Jerome has decent size for a guard at 6'5" (although he plays smaller than that listing), and he can play more of a secondary role spotting up, especially if he continues to hit shots at a high rate. He posts a good assist to turnover rate, and generally makes good decision with the ball in his hands. Defensively, Jerome works hard as an on-ball defender but is a little overmatched from an athleticism perspective. He isn't the most quick laterally, and is on the thinner side as well, so he can get bullied by bigger stronger players, and simply get bumped off his spot to allow separation. He does get a good amount of steals though. Jerome has shown he can be a reliable third guard that can adequately fill minutes during the regular season. Jerome will be nearing age 28 as a free agency in 2025, so he's not a young prospect, but has shown he can be a good rotation player.

Summary

Jerome will be an unrestricted free agent with a $3.4 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since the Cavaliers will be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Jerome's Early Bird rights until he is re-signed or signs elsewhere. The Cavaliers could offer Jerome a starting salary of up to 5% more than the average salary (likely around $13.5 million) using the Early Bird exception, which should be enough to bring him back. For other teams, if Jerome demands a starting salary of more than the full $14.1 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him, unless a sign-and-trade is worked out. It's possible however that Jerome could be had for the full MLE or slightly less.
