2025 Free Agents - Brandon Williams

Williams signed a two-way contract with Dallas in 2024 and played well enough to turn that into a standard contract near the end of the '24-'25 season. He had a hot finish to the season for the injured Mavericks, even starting a few games. Williams posted a 63% true shooting and averaged double figures in scoring for the Mavs in '24-'25, including hitting 43% from 3. He hasn't shown that level of shooting in the past, so that could just be small sample size variance. He does have a very good handle though, and can get in the lane and make plays. Williams will be 25 years old as a potential free agent in 2025, so he's not exactly a young prospect. I think he showed enough that the Mavs will want to retain him, whether that's by holding onto him or waiving him and trying to-resign him on a longer deal if he clears waivers.

Summary

Williams' $2.3 million salary for 2025-2026 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Mavericks will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, any team could claim him off waivers as his contract fits within the minimum-salary exception. If Williams becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Williams is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum, and he may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.

Cap Considerations

Yogi Ferrell (1 year minimum, 2020) Jose Alvarado (3rd year non-guaranteed minimum salary not waived, 2023) Devontae Graham (1 year non-guaranteed minimum, 2024)

Player/Contract Comparison

Potential Teams: Mavericks, Clippers, Lakers, Wizards, Timberwolves

Predicted Contract: Not waived: $2.3 million
If waived: 1-year, $2.4 million ($2,3 million cap hit) with the Mavericks
