2022 Free Agents - Eric Paschall
Summary
After a fairly productive rookie season in '19-'20 for the lottery-bound Warriors, Paschall fell out of the rotation in '20-'21 when Steph Curry returned from injury and the Warriors actually had playoff hopes. After being traded to the Jazz in 2021, Paschall had some decent moments during the '21-'22 season but wasn't a consistent part of the rotation, and only played sparingly in the playoffs.
Paschall knows what he's good at offensively, as he shoots decently from midrange and therefore takes a lot of shots from that area. However, he doesn't have much else in his offensive game. He's only a 31% three-point shooter, and generally just isn't a threat from outside. However, he has improved each year, and hit 36% in '21-'22, so there may be some hope that he can become an average three-point shooter. Paschall has the ability to power his way to the rim, but hasn't become a consistent finisher inside yet.
Paschall's best position may be as a small-ball five, but the Jazz did not trust him much in that regard in '21-'22. On defense, Paschall has the size and strength to guard multiple positions, and could hold up defensively matching up against most centers. However, he doesn't get any blocks and at 6'7" it's hard to imagine him actually become a legitimate rim protector and anchor a defense. If a lineup with Paschall at center can switch heavily and stay in front on the perimeter, that becomes less of a problem though.
Cap Considerations
Paschall will be a restricted free agent with full Bird rights and a $2.2 million cap hold and Qualifying Offer. Since the Jazz will not have cap room, Paschall's cap hold will not play a factor. The Jazz may not even tender him a QO, which would make him an unrestricted free agent.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Paschall as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE to sign him to an offer sheet. Due to the Jazz's high luxury tax bill, there's a chance Paschall could be pulled away from Utah without even giving him a big offer sheet. There's also a chance that Paschall is an unrestricted free agent with only minimum offers.
Potential Teams: Jazz, Nets, 76ers, Suns, Bucks
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.9 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Jazz
Actual Contract: 1-year, Two-Way contract with the Timberwolves
Paschall couldn't even get a minimum contract, and ended up settling for a two-way contract with Minnesota, where he will provide a small-ball big option during the regular season.
