2022 Free Agents - Kelly Oubre
Summary
Oubre's struggles in '20-'21 with the Warriors were well-documented, as he started out ice cold from three and just never really fit in with how they wanted to play. While he played slightly better as the season went on, he still finished with only a 32% hit rate from three. To make matters worse, he didn't shoot well from anywhere else on the court, other than being slightly-above at the rim, according to Cleaning the Glass. Thus his 50.1% eFG% was well below average.
In '21-'22 with Charlotte, Oubre shot a little better at 34% from three, but he does so on high volume and can get hot and swing games. He has also taken fewer midrange jumpers, and since he didn't excel in that area, it has helped his overall efficiency, with his eFG% being slightly above average for his position in '21-'22, according to Cleaning the Glass.
Oubre is an athletic wing that can score at multiple levels and do so off the catch and off the dribble. His athleticism and willingness to run makes him a solid transition player, which he has been able to take advantage of in Charlotte. However, Oubre has never been the most cerebral player, and that particularly came to light in Golden State, as he didn't learn how to fit in to the high-IQ, ball movement-heavy offense that the Warriors like to execute.
Oubre's long wingspan makes him disruptive on defense, as he has consistently posted good steal and block rates. However, he has never focused enough on that end to be a legitimate defensive talent, and while he's certainly not the main cause of the Hornets' being a below-average defense, he doesn't help in that regard.
Cap Considerations
Oubre's $12.6 million salary for 2022-2023 is only $5 million guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Hornets will have no form of Bird rights on him.
If Oubre becomes a free agent, only teams with cap space would be able to pursue him if his market is above the full $10.3M Non-Taxpayer MLE. However, there's a chance that Oubre could be had for the full MLE or less, and thus teams without cap space could have interest in him as well.
Potential Teams: Hornets, Kings, Spurs, Bulls, Timberwolves
Predicted Contract: Not waived: $12.6 million
If waived: 2-year, $21 million with the Kings
Actual Contract: Not waived: $12.6 million
As expected, the Hornets held onto Oubre past his guarantee date, and he will hit unrestricted free agency in 2023.
