2022 Free Agents - Daishen Nix
Summary
Nix was a fairly high recruit in the 2020 high school class, and it earned him a spot on the G-League Ignite team for the '20-'21 season. At 6'3", Nix has good size for a point guard and showed a good feel for the game in high school, but that didn't translate all that well during his time with the Ignite. He put on some bad weight, and struggled to score with any sort of efficiency, including shooting under 18% from three. Nix went undrafted in the 2021 draft and ended up signing a two-way contract with Houston.
Nix's second year in the G-League went much better than his time with the Ingite. He averaged over 22 points and 7 assists per game and improved his scoring efficiency. However, it's still doubtful that he'll ever be a reliable rotation-level player. Aside from his passing ability, he just doesn't have a lot to hang his hat on. His outside shooting is questionable, and he's a below-average athlete, which limits his upside in terms of scoring off drives and on the defensive end. Nix is still only 20 years old, so there's time for improvement, but he needs to be significantly better to stick around in the league.
Cap Considerations
Nix's $1.6 million salary for 2022-2023 is only nonguaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Rockets will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract doesn't fit within the minimum salary exception as it was a four-year contract.
If Nix becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Nix is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum.
Potential Teams: Rockets, Hornets, Wizards, Pacers, Thunder
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.6 million (non-guaranteed) with the Rockets
