2022 Free Agents - Greg Monroe

Summary
After falling out of the league for the '19-'20 and 20-'21 seasons, Monroe returned during the '21-'22 and made several stops, filling in for teams when COVID was sweeping through the league. Monroe played 14 games total for four teams, and ended up signing with the Timberwolves for the rest of the season.

While he can still provide some post scoring off the bench, Monroe's style of play does not fit well in today's NBA. He doesn't stretch the floor, which can clog the paint for his teammates, and he is a liability on the defensive end. Currently, Monroe might be best known for how poorly the 76ers played in the 2019 playoffs during his briefs minutes backing up Joel Embiid.

Monroe was decently efficient and productive during his stints of play in '21-'22, and overall has nice touch and some ability to facilitate from the elbows, but I would be surprised if he made a roster in '22-'23.

Cap Considerations
Monroe will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.8 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Timberwolves could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $3.4 million. This should be enough to retain Monroe, since he settled for the minimum to come to Minnesota, and had even fallen out of the league. Alternatively, the Timberwolves could use their Mid-Level Exception or Bi-Annual Exception to re-sign Monroe if he demands more than $3.4 million.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Monroe as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Monroe only gets minimum offers, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers

Potential Teams: Timberwolves, Trailblazers, Wizards, Suns, Nuggets

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.9 million (non-guaranteed) with the Timberwolves
