2022 Free Agents - Paul Millsap
Summary
In his prime, Millsap was a well above-average defender. He has good hands and was near the top of the league in steal rate for almost his entire career. He was never a great rim protector, and didn't have the size to be, but, but he had good defensive instincts. There was hope that as he aged he could possibly because a solid small-ball five, and the Nets certainly hoped for that when they signed him in 2021.
Millsap took a step back in '20-'21, as Michael Porter, Jr. took his spot in the starting lineup. His numbers were down across the board from both a volume and efficiency perspective. After shooting 44% from three in '19-'20, Millsap only shot 35% in '20-'21 and 19% in '21-'22, albeit on a small sample size.
Millsap really struggled overall in '21-'22, as he didn't make much of an impact in Brooklyn, and after being traded to Philadelphia the 76ers soon realized they needed someone else backing up Joel Embiid, and signed De'Andre Jordan, who wasn't exactly showing much in his time in Los Angeles.
Millsap's career is hanging by a thread, and based on his performance this season I wouldn't be surprised if he retired. If he chooses to continue his career, I'm not sure he'll get much interest in free agency.
Cap Considerations
Millsap will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.8 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the 76ers could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $3.4 million. This should be enough to retain Millsap, since he settled for the minimum of $2.6 million in 2021. Alternatively, the 76ers could use their Mid-Level Exception to re-sign Millsap if he demands more than $3.4 million.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Millsap as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Millsap only gets minimum offers, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Potential Teams: Suns, Bucks, Nuggets, Jazz, Mavericks
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.9 million (non-guaranteed) with the Suns
