2022 Free Agents - Damion Lee
Summary
Lee has shown he can provide some decent rotational minutes in recent seasons. He's a career 36% three-point shooter, including 37% over the last two seasons. Lee isn't just a spot-up shooter either, as he can hit tough ones on-the-move or off-the-dribble, although he has had to take fewer of those during the last two seasons as the Warriors have improved. He has shown some ability as a spark-plug creator, while also providing value as a spot-up threat off-the-ball. However, he doesn't really make plays for others, and hardly gets to the rim.
Lee will be 29 years old as a free agent in 2022, so this may be his best opportunity to get one decent-sized contract. However, the fact that he was mostly out of the rotation for the Warriors in the playoffs will not do him any favors, as he may just be seen as a regular-season player and not get any great offers.
Cap Considerations
Lee will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.8 million cap hold and full Bird Rights. Since the Warriors will likely be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Lee's Bird rights, and have no restrictions on re-signing him. If a player has a smaller cap hold than his starting salary, his team can use cap space to sign-free agents before using Bird Rights to re-sign its own free agents. Since the Warriors will not have cap room, Lee's cap hold will not play a factor.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Lee as even teams without cap space could likely use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or possibly even the Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also possible that Lee only receives minimum offers.
Potential Teams: Warriors, Lakers, Bulls, Bucks, Timberwolves
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.1 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Warriors
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.1 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Suns
Lee joined another Western Conference contender in Phoenix, and will provide them with another shooter that should be in the fringes of the rotation in the regular season.
