2022 Free Agents - Jake Layman
Summary
Layman has some athleticism, and uses that athleticism to get to the rim frequently and finishes well inside. However, he's never been a reliable outside shooter, hitting only 30% of his threes over the course of his career. He also rebounds very poorly, which isn't necessarily his role but his rebounding rate is so low it pops off the page.
Layman has been hampered by injuries in recent seasons, only playing in 64 games over the course of the '19-'20 and '20-'21 seasons combined. After falling out of the rotation Layman only played in 34 games in '21-'22, and according to Cleaning the Glass, which filters out garbage time, he only played in 12 games (119 total minutes), that were non-garbage time. Layman's NBA career is hanging by a thread at this point.
Cap Considerations
Layman will be an unrestricted free agent with a $7.5 million cap hold and full Bird rights. As his cap hold exceeds the salary he will get in free agency, and because the Timberwolves will likely be operating over the salary cap, his cap hold is not really relevant.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Layman as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's likely that Layman only get minimum offers, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Potential Teams: Suns, Timberwolves, Bucks, Heat, Pelicans
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.2 million (non-guaranteed) with the Suns
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.2 million (non-guaranteed) with the Celtics
As expected, Layman only signed a non-guaranteed contract, and is unlikely to make the final 15-man roster.
