2022 Free Agents - Jock Landale
Summary
Landale played in Australia and Europe from 2019-2021, earning NBL Finals MVP for Melbourne in 2021. He was signed by the Spurs in 2021 on a two-year minimum contract. Landale showed good production, particularly in the 2021 season in Australia, where he averaged over 16 points per game and just under 8 rebounds per game. He doesn't take a ton of outside shots, but is a decent threat from outside, hitting 37% from three on low volume. He is a solid post player but can provide spacing as a pick-and-pop big as well.
Landale saw limited minutes for the Spurs during the '21-'22 season, as Greg Popovich would sometimes choose him in the rotation over Drew Eubanks. However, once Zach Collins got healthy, this pushed Landale back out of the rotation. Landale interestingly had a solid offensive rebounding rate, but was near the bottom of the league in defensive rebounding rate, according to Cleaning the Glass. He provided some stretch value, as over 40% of his field goal attempts came from three, but he only hit them at a 31% clip.
It seems like the Spurs like Landale, and given he is on a non-guaranteed minimum contract next season that would normally mean he would be returning. However, the Spurs already have eight players with guaranteed money in '22-'23, three more with non-guaranteed money that are likely to return, and three first round picks in 2022. Therefore, the Spurs may waive Landale simply because they just don't have a roster spot for him.
Cap Considerations
Landale's $1.6 million salary for 2022-2023 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Spurs will have no form of Bird rights on him. If the Spurs waive Landale, any team could claim him off waivers since his contract was signed using the Minimum Salary Exception.
If Landale becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. I would also say that in the scenario Landale is waived and clears waivers, his value will have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum.
Potential Teams: Spurs, Raptors, Suns, Trailblazers, Hornets
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.6 million with the Raptors
Actual Contract: Not waived: $1.6 million with the Suns
Landale was not waived, and he was traded to Phoenix and made the opening roster. He may still get waived before his full-season salary gets guaranteed on January 10th.
