2022 Free Agents - Vit Krejci
Summary
Krejci was surprisingly a top-40 pick in the 2020 draft, as he was not even included on Sam Vecenie's top-100 board going into the draft nor was he in John Hollinger's top 70. He has some passing and shooting skills that could make him a stretch-four, but he has suffered with injuries and may not have the strength or athleticism to compete at the NBA level. The Thunder made an interesting choice to bring him over rather than keep him stashed.
Krejci got some playing time down the stretch of the season, getting 8 starts in 28 games and playing nearly 700 non-garbage time minutes, according to Cleaning the Glass. He shot a decent 35% from three thus and finished well at the rim. He showed some decent handles and has some skills and good size for a wing. I'm not convinced he can be a rotation player on a good team, but he has likely shown enough that the Thunder will keep him around for the '22-'23 season, although they may have a roster crunch.
Cap Considerations
Krejci's $1.6 million salary for 2022-2023 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Thunder will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract doesn't fit within the minimum salary exception as it was a three-year contract.
If Krejci becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Krejci is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum.
Potential Teams: Magic, Thunder, Spurs, Kings, Pelicans
Predicted Contract: Not waived: $1.6 million
If waived: 1-year, $1.6 million (non-guaranteed) with the Magic
Actual Contract: Not waived: $1.6 million
Krejci was traded to Atlanta, where he made the opening roster but may still get cut before his full-season salary becomes guaranteed on January 10th.
