2022 Free Agents - Frank Kaminsky
Summary
Kaminsky was only able to get a one-year non-guaranteed contract in 2020, and after he was waived by Sacramento he was claimed by Phoenix, where he played in the previous season. Surprisingly, Kaminsky got consistent minutes during a stretch in the middle of the season, even starting 13 games, and re-signed with Phoenix in 2021 on another one-year minimum contract.
While his minutes predictably went down as the '20-'21 season progressed, he did a decent job during that time. Kaminsky shot 37% from three, showing that he can still provide value as a stretch big. However, his finishing numbers at the rim have always been bad, which has made him an inefficient scorer overall.
Kaminsky also has some real defensive shortcomings, as he's not a rim protector and struggles to move his feet on the perimeter. Kaminsky is someone that I wouldn't want to rely on in the playoffs, and the Suns mostly did not use him during their playoff run in 2021.
When he's healthy, Kaminsky has shown he can at least be an "innings eater" during the regular season. However, Kaminsky has been unable to stay healthy, playing in only eight games in '21-'22 before being waived prior to the playoffs. Kaminsky will likely be fighting for one of the final few roster spots on whatever teams are interested in him this summer.
Cap Considerations
Kaminsky was waived by the Suns near the end of the '21-'22 season.
Teams will have multiple ways to sign Kaminsky as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Kaminsky only gets minimum offers, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Potential Teams: Heat, Nets, Suns, Thunder, Jazz
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.4 million (non-guaranteed) with the Heat
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.4 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Hawks
Kaminsky signed a minimum contract with Atlanta, and will replace Gorgui Dieng as their third-string center who can stretch the floor.
