2022 Free Agents - Rodney Hood
Summary
Hood had some big moments in the 2019 playoffs, mostly spotting up around Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum, but since then his career has been stalled by injuries. Hood missed the entire '19-'20 season after tearing his Achilles, and struggled in '20-'21, shooting a career low 31% from three while not shooting much better from other areas of the court. Age and injuries have sapped some of Hood's athleticism, which was never elite to begin with, and he has struggled to be a valuable rotational player.
Hood's career will mostly come down to the rate he hits outside shots, but he does have other skills. Hood has the potential to be a serviceable secondary ball handler, as he is patient in the pick-and-roll and can use the snake dribble to create shots. However, he is limited by his ability to make plays for others, and has always played smaller than he appears on defense. He has consistently had poor block, steal, and rebound rates.
Hood got a decent chunk of minutes for the Bucks when they were hit with injuries in the early parts of the '21-'22 season, but he only hit 32% from three and failed to make a positive impact. After being traded to the Clippers as part of the Serge Ibaka trade, Hood never really got any playing time. Therefore, Hood could be looking at just minimum offers again, or possibly find himself out of the league.
Cap Considerations
Hood will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.8 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Clippers could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $3.1 million. This should be enough to retain Hood, since he settled for the minimum of $2.2 million in 2021. Alternatively, the Clippers could use their Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception to re-sign Hood if he demands more than $3.1 million.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Hood as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. Since he signed a minimum contract in 2021, teams will hope to get him at the minimum in 2022 too, and may not even offer him fully-guaranteed offers.
Potential Teams: Pelicans, Knicks, Wizards, Clippers, Nets
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million (non-guaranteed) with the Pelicans
