2022 Free Agents - Blake Griffin
Summary
After looking like a shell of his former self, Griffin was bought out by the Pistons in 2021 and signed a minimum contract with the Nets, where he looked like he could be a legitimate, albeit flawed, role player. However, after having some nice moments in the '20-'21 season, Griffin struggled in '21-'22, and his remaining time in the NBA may be limited.
In the 2021 playoffs, Griffin actually provided some value to the Nets. He defended Giannis Antetokounmpo decently, and was able to use his strength to be a stout defender and draw some charges. On offense, Griffin was able to facilitate a bit from the mid-post and act as a pick-and-pop threat, hitting just enough shots to keep defenses honest.
In '21-'22 however, Griffin's loss of athleticism looked even more apparent, and it's likely his days of being a real impact player are over. On defense, Griffin doesn't have the lateral quickness to defend in space, and even at his peak athletically he was never a great rim protector. He also no longer finishes well at the rim, and when you combine that with his 25% three-point shooting in '21-'22, you get a 48% eFG%, which was near the bottom of the league.
Cap Considerations
Griffin will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.8 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since the Nets will most likely be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Griffin's Early Bird rights until he is re-signed or signs elsewhere. The Nets could offer Griffin a starting salary of up to 5% more than the average salary (likely around $10.9 million) using the Early Bird exception, which should be more than enough should they wish to bring him back.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Griffin as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that he only gets minimum offers.
Potential Teams: Warriors, Nets, Suns, Lakers, Clippers
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.9 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Warriors
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.9 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Celtics
Griffin ended up signing with the Celtics, and will give them some depth in the frontcourt as they deal with injuries early in the season.
