2022 Free Agents - Anthony Gill
Summary
The Wizards signed the overseas veteran in 2020 to provide some depth at forward, but Gill was unable to make much of an impact, only playing 173 minutes of non-garbage time, according to Cleaning the Glass. Those minutes increased slightly in '21-'22, and Gill has mostly played center as opposed to power forward, like he did in '20-'21.
Statistically, nothing really pops out for Gill. He has some ability to stretch the floor, as he shot over 38% from three over the past two seasons, albeit on a small sample size. He does have enough off-the-dribble ability to attack closeouts, which is helpful for a stretch big. Gill has some overall feel for the game and a knock for making the right play, but I don't think he is anything more than replacement-level, at best. His poor rebounding numbers make it more difficult to play him at center. Gill is already 29, so there's also not a ton of upside or expectation for improvement.
Cap Considerations
Gill will be a restricted free agent with a $2 million cap hold and Qualifying Offer, and the Wizards will have his Early Bird rights. However, the Wizards may not tender him a QO, which would make him an unrestricted free agent. If the Wizards re-sign Gill using the Early-Bird Exception, they could offer him a starting salary of up to 105% of the average salary this past season (roughly $10.9 million), which would be more than enough.
Since Gill will only have two years of service, he will be subject to the Gilbert Arenas provision. This means that any offer sheet he signs with a team besides Washington can have a starting maximum salary of $10.3 million, but the third and potentially fourth years of that contract can have a large jump (up to the max). His cap hit would then be the average salary over the life of the contract. If the Wizards match, they could choose for his cap hit to either be his actual salary per season or the average over the life of the contract, provided the average fits within the Early Bird Exception or cap space.
I do not expect this to come into play for Gill, as I think any offers for him would fit within the full Non-Taxpayer MLE over the length of the contract. There's a chance Gill might be an unrestricted free agent with only minimum offers, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Potential Teams: Pelicans, Wizards, Heat, Cavaliers, Bucks
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.8 million (non-guaranteed) with the Pelicans
Actual Contract: 2-year, $3.8 million with the Wizards
Gill re-signed on what I presume is a two-year minimum contract with the second year non-guaranteed, but I haven't seen confirmed details.
