2022 Free Agents - Bryn Forbes

Summary
Forbes's main skill has always been his outside shooting. He's a career 41% three point shooter, and has shot at that same rate in '21-'22. He's not a true point guard in any sense, as he's not much of a playmaker or facilitator (he averages just over one assist per game for his career). At 6'3", Forbes makes it somewhat difficult for him to play next to smaller point guards, as that forces two small guards on the court at once.

Forbes isn't someone that can rise and fire in really tight spaces, but he's also not just a standstill option either. You can run pindowns for Forbes and expect him to knock down shots on the move if he gets some space.

Forbes didn't have a great playoffs for the Bucks in 2021, only shooting 38% from three (which is still slightly above-average) and saw his minutes decline as the Bucks got further along in the playoffs.

The main reason for him losing minutes was his defense, as Forbes can be targeted on that end due to his lack of size and athleticism. He also isn't disruptive on that end, having a very low steal rate. However, I think Forbes has proven that he can contribute to winning teams, even if that level of contribution diminishes at the highest levels of competition.

Cap Considerations
Forbes will be an unrestricted free agent with a $5.4 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. Using his Non-Bird rights, the most the Nuggets could offer him is a starting salary of $5.4 million, which would likely be enough to retain him. If necessary, they could also use the MLE to re-sign him if he demands more than $5.4 million.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Forbes as even teams without cap space could use either of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE or BAE to sign him. With the Nuggets' luxury tax concerns, it's likely that other teams could outbid the Nuggets for his services without having to make a big offer.

Potential Teams: Celtics, Nuggets, Warriors, Lakers, 76ers

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $5 million with the Celtics

Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.3 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Timberwolves

Forbes joins the Wolves on a one-year minimum contract, and will provide them some additional shooting.
