2022 Free Agents - Gorgui Dieng

Summary
Dieng quietly put together a nice two-half season stretch (going back to the 2020 trade deadline) during his time in Memphis. He shot 38% from three and his field goal percent at the rim was better than he ever had in his career. On defense, his block and steal rate was near the top of the league, and overall looked like a solid backup center as the Grizzlies' bench units often thrived. However, those units continued to thrive after Dieng departed, and after being bought out he did not make a real impact with the Spurs, and signed with the Hawks in 2021 as their third center.

Dieng has entered the stage of his career where the majority of his attempts come from three, and it has helped his efficiency in '21-'22 as he has shot 43% from there. He continues to have above-average steal and block rates, and has shown he can be a serviceable backup center.

Dieng's minutes decreased as the season went on, particularly after Onyeka Okongwu recovered from his injury. Dieng wasn't able to get minutes when the games matter the most, but he was able to provide some solid center depth when the Hawks needed him during the regular season.

Dieng will already be 32 years old as a free agent in 2022, so there will be some real questions of how he ages. Even as a solid backup center, Dieng may still only get minimum offers in 2022.

Cap Considerations
Dieng will be an unrestricted free agent with a $4.8 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. Using his Non-Bird rights, the most the Hawks could offer him is a starting salary of $4.8 million, which would likely be enough to retain him. If necessary, they could also use the MLE to re-sign him if he demands more than $4.8 million.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Dieng as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE or BAE to sign him. There's also a chance that Dieng could be had for the minimum.

Potential Teams: Nets, Hawks, Raptors, Hornets, Jazz

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Nets

Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Spurs

As expected, Dieng signed a minimum contract. However, I did not expect it to be with the Spurs, as is prior stint in San Antonio did not go all that well.
