2022 Free Agents - Jarrett Culver
Summary
After leading Texas Tech to the National Championship game in 2019, Culver had some hype coming into the draft and went sixth overall to Minnesota. The hope was that Culver could be a legitimate scorer at the wing - someone that could create his own shot, shoot well from outside, and score from multiple levels.
However, his career has been pretty disastrous so far. He had a pretty rough rookie year, as he was inefficient from everywhere on the court, resulting in a 45.5% eFG%. He struggled to make plays off the dribble and didn't make plays for others. In his second season, it was more of the same, and he also struggled with ankle injuries that limited him to only 19 games. The Timberwolves essentially gave up on him and traded him to Memphis, where he has been unable to get minutes on a deep Grizzlies team.
Defensively, Culver has some potential as a wing with decent size. He moves his feet well on that end, rebounds decently, and can get some blocks and steals. Overall, he needs to show more offensively in order to make an impact. If not, he could find himself playing overseas as early as the '22-'23 season.
Culver will still only be 23 years old when he hits free agency in 2022, so there could be a chance that teams will give him a chance, but he may need to earn a roster spot rather than getting guaranteed money up front.
Cap Considerations
Culver had the fourth year of his rookie option declined, so he will be an unrestricted free agent with a $8.1 million cap hold and limited Bird Rights. The highest starting salary the Grizzlies can offer is the $8.1 million amount of the option year that was declined.
If another team has interest in signing Culver, they could pry him away from Memphis by offering him more than the $8.1 million that the Grizzlies can offer, by either using cap space or the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him. However, I don't think it would take that much to sign Culver, and he may not even get any offers above the minimum.
Potential Teams: Magic, Grizzlies, Thunder, Pistons, Cavaliers
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.9 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Magic
Actual Contract: Two-way contract with the Hawks
Culver ended up settling for a two-way contract with Atlanta, and will hope to turn that into a standard NBA contract before the season is up.
