2022 Free Agents - Amir Coffey

Summary
After showing some flashes during his first two seasons in the league, Coffey broke out a bit in '21-'22, playing 69 games for the Clippers and getting over 22 minutes per game. Coffey is a solid 38% shooter from three, and even has the ability to take some off-the-dribble. At 6'8" Coffey has good size for a wing and has fit in well with how the Clippers want to play. The only issue is that when the Clippers are healthy they are just so deep at the wing that Coffey is likely to get phased out of the rotation.

Coffey isn't someone you would want to put the ball in his hands to run your offense, but he does have enough off-the-dribble ability to be a secondary or tertiary creator. He can attack closeouts and get to the rim, which will be key if he continues to shoot the ball well. He'll be 25 years old when he hits free agency this summer, so he's not exactly a young prospect, but I think it's reasonable to expect some more growth. With wings in high demand, Coffey could be a solid rotational player.

Cap Considerations
Coffey will be a restricted free agent with full Bird rights and a $2.2 million cap hold and Qualifying Offer. If a player has a smaller cap hold than his starting salary, his team can use cap space to sign-free agents before using Bird Rights to re-sign its own free agents, but since the Clippers will be over the cap, Coffey's cap hold is not relevant.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Coffey as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE to sign him to an offer sheet. However, Coffey being a restricted free agent will lower his interest among teams, as they will worry that the only way to pry him away from Los Angeles would be to overpay him. However, due to the Clippers' high luxury tax bill, they may not match on a decent-sized offer sheet for Coffey.

Potential Teams: Kings, Clippers, Jazz, Pacers, Bulls

Predicted Contract: 3-year, $17.5 million with the Kings

Actual Contract: 3-year, $11 million with the Clippers

I thought Coffey would do a little better than he did, but apparently the Clippers were very willing to pay whatever luxury tax it took to re-sign him and other teams weren't going to bother with waiting on an offer sheet. I'm not sure there's many minutes available for Coffey, but his salary isn't that much more than the minimum, and the Clippers don't seem to care about paying more.
