2022 Free Agents - Davontae Cacok
Summary
Cacok has only played sparingly during his first three NBA seasons, but was productive in the G-League in '21-'22, and was rewarded with a rest-of-season contract from the Spurs. In 29 G-League games he averaged over 18 points and just under 12 rebounds per game on solid efficiency. He even showed some ability to stretch the floor, hitting 17 of his 50 three-pointers. Cacok will likely have to hit threes at a decent rate in order to get NBA minutes, as he is an undersized big at 6'7".
Cacok doesn't get blocks and is unlikely to be a rim protector, but his ability to rebound on both ends of the floor helps him play bigger than his size. Cacok will already be 26 when the '22-'23 season starts, so he probably needs to show more soon if he wants to keep getting chances and stick around in the league.
Cap Considerations
Cacok will be a restricted free agent with a $2.1 million cap hold and Qualifying Offer, and the Spurs will have his Non-Bird rights. If the Spurs don't think Cacok is worth retaining for $2.1 million or more, they may not even tender him the QO, which would make him an unrestricted free agent.
If the Spurs re-sign Cacok using the Non-Bird Exception, they could offer him a starting salary of $2.3 million, which would likely be enough to retain him. Alternatively, the Spurs could offer use cap space or their Room Mid-Level Exception if $2.3 million is not enough.
Other teams will have multiple ways to Cacok as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or even the Room MLE or BAE to sign him to an offer sheet or outright as an unrestricted free agent. He also could possibly be signed for the minimum, especially if he is unrestricted.
Potential Teams: Spurs, Raptors, Hornets, Kings, Wizards
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.9 million (non-guaranteed) with the Spurs
Actual Contract: 1-year, $1.9 million (non-guaranteed) with the Trailblazers
As expected, Cacok ended up signing a non-guaranteed contract, and is unlikely to make the final roster in Portland.
