2022 Free Agents - Armoni Brooks
Summary
Brooks was on a two-way contract with the Rockets in '20-'21, and got a decent amount of playing time, especially once the Rockets were in full tank mode. During the 20 games that Brooks played, he got threes up at a high rate, taking almost eight attempts per game in about 26 minutes of action. He hit them at a solid rate too - just over 38%. In true Rockets' form, he only took 1.9 two-point attempts per game. Unfortunately for Brooks, his three-point percentage dipped to 31% in '21-'22, and he was waived in order to facilitate some of the trade deadline moves by the Rockets.
Frankly, I was a little bit surprised that the Rockets waived Brooks, and was even more surprised that he didn't seem to get any interest by other teams either on a waiver claim or just as a free agent after being waived, until finally being signed by Toronto near the end of the season. Brooks certainly needs to hit shots at a higher rate than he did in '21-'22 to have any shot at sticking around in the league, but I think there's a chance he could do that.
Cap Considerations
Brooks's $1.8 million salary for 2022-2023 is only partially guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Raptors will have no form of Bird rights on him. Since Brooks's contract fits within the minimum salary exception, any team could claim him off waivers if he is waived.
If Brooks becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Brooks could only receive minimum offers, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Potential Teams: Pistons, Thunder, Mavericks, Raptors, Trailblazers
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.8 million (non-guaranteed) with the Pistons
Actual Contract: 1-year, $1.8 million (non-guaranteed) with the Hawks
Brooks was waived by the Raptors, and only ended up signing an Exhibit 10 contract with the Hawks. He's unlikely to make the 15-man roster, and will likely start the season in the G-League.
