2022 Free Agents - Charles Bassey

Summary
Bassey was an elite high school prospect whose college career did not go as planned, as he had a productive freshman year at Western Kentucky but returned to college and tore his ACL as a sophomore. He had a good junior year but still ended up only being drafted in the late second round by Philadelphia.

Bassey's athleticism jumps off the page, as uses his length and jumping ability to block shots and finish lobs. He runs the floor hard and has decent hands. He also has a decent midrange game. His feel for the game could use some work, as he doesn't have any sort of passing feel. To be an effective pick-and-roll threat in the NBA, he'll need to at least be able to kick to the opposite corner as the roll man or just find the open man when he's doubled down low.

Defensively, he can protect the rim but doesn't move all that well laterally, so defending in space will be tough for him. He's likely going to be limited to playing deep drop coverage.

Bassey didn't receive many minutes for the 76ers in his rookie year, but in the few minutes he did play he shot well at the rim and rebounded well on both ends of the court. His numbers in 6 G-League games have also been similar.

I don't think the 76ers should be getting too excited about Bassey yet, as he has more to prove in order to crack a rotation, but he's shown enough to be brought back for the '22-'23 season.

Cap Considerations
Bassey's $1.6 million salary for 2022-2023 is only $75k guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the 76ers will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract doesn't fit within the minimum salary exception as it was a three-year contract.

If Bassey becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. If Bassey is waived and clears waivers, his value will likely have dropped low enough that he would only have offers for the minimum.

Potential Teams: 76ers, Thunder, Timberwolves, Suns, Wizards

Predicted Contract: Not waived: $1.6 million
If waived: 1-year, $1.6 million with the Thunder
