2022 Free Agents - LaMarcus Aldridge

Summary
After briefly retiring due to a health scare concerning his heart, Aldridge returned to the NBA in 2021 with hopes to help lead the Nets to their first ever NBA championship. The former All-Star has looked like a shell of himself in recent years, but was actually better than expected in '21-'22.

Offensively, Aldridge is still one of the best midrange shooters in the league. He cooled off a little bit after his hot start to the season, but still shot 54% from midrange. Aldridge doesn't quite have the mid-post ability that he used to, as he mostly lives off of pick-and-pop jumpers. He has developed his game to shoot some threes, but he's not someone that defenses fear from that range. While Aldridge has shoot 36% from three over the past two seasons, it has been on pretty low volume.

At this stage of his career, Aldridge is very slow-footed on defense, so he may not even be able to stay on the floor if he were put in a high-stakes playoff game, as the opposing team could really target him on that end. His best hope is that offensively he can survive, and potentially keep second units afloat on offense while not getting burned by the opposing second unit. Aldridge was out of the rotation for the Nets in the playoffs,

Aldridge will be 37 this summer, and I think he will be on minimum contracts for the rest of his career, which unfortunately may not be much longer.

Cap Considerations
Aldridge will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.8 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since the Nets will most likely be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Aldridge's Early Bird rights until he is re-signed or signs elsewhere. The Nets could offer Aldridge a starting salary of up to 5% more than the average salary (likely around $10.9 million) using the Early Bird exception, which should be more than enough should they wish to bring him back.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Aldridge as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also most likely that Aldridge only gets minimum offers.

Potential Teams: Bulls, Warriors, Nets, Clippers, Suns

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.9 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Bulls
