2022 Free Agents - Alize Johnson
Summary
Despite being a productive G-League player, Johnson has yet to get much NBA playing time, as he has played in less than 200 minutes of non-garbage time over the last three seasons, according to Cleaning the Glass. He gave the Bulls some decent minutes early in the '21-'22 season, but was eventually waived to make room for Alfonzo McKinnie.
Through 65 G-League games from 2018-2021, Johnson averaged nearly 19 points per game and over 14 rebounds, which is excellent for his size at 6'8". His outside shooting numbers are okay as he hit 36% from three on nearly three attempts per game, but he overall isn't quite respected as a shooter yet. If Johnson can hit outside shots at a higher rate at the NBA level, he could be a versatile forward that can also rebound and defend.
Cap Considerations
Johnson was waived by the Bulls during the '21-'22 season, and while he did sign some 10-day hardship contracts after being waived, he did not sign a rest of season contract with another team.
Teams will have multiple ways to sign Johnson as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or even the Room MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Johnson only gets minimum offers, and may not even get fully-guaranteed offers.
Potential Teams: Trailblazers, Thunder, Wizards, Kings, Jazz
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.9 million (non-guaranteed) with the Trailblazers
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2 million (non-guaranteed) with the Spurs
Johnson ended up signing a non-guaranteed minimum contract with the Spurs, and will fight for a roster spot in training camp, which will be a tough battle as the Spurs have 13 players on guaranteed contracts and two others on partially-guaranteed contracts that are likely to stick around (Tre Jones and Keita Bates-Diop).
