2022 Free Agents - Avery Bradley
Summary
Bradley had a really nice season for the Lakers in '19-'20, starting the vast majority of his games and hitting shots at a solid rate. Bradley's eFG% of 52.9% was solidly above average for his position, per Cleaning the Glass. His usage rate was near the bottom of the league, but that was probably for the best given Bradley's skillset. Unfortunately, Bradley's play was somewhat forgotten after choosing to sit out the Orlando Bubble as the Lakers cruised to a championship without him.
Bradley was in a really good situation in Los Angeles, as he could defend point guards while not having to be a lead guard on offense. However, Bradley was unable to make an impact in a similar role in Miami in the '20-'21 season next to bigger playmakers like Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, and was traded to Houston as part of the Victor Oladipo trade. Bradley missed a lot of games in '20-'21 in a mostly lost year for him.
Unfortunately for Bradley, he wasn't been unable to replicate his '19-'20 performance with the Lakers in '21-'22. He shot decently, hitting 39% from three, but really struggled to finish at the rim. Since he reduced the amount of midrange jumpers takes, his eFG% was slightly above-average, according to Cleaning the Glass.
Bradley just isn't much of an off-the-dribble threat, as he rarely gets to the rim and hardly every gets to the free-throw line. He also isn't the on-ball defender that he used to be. He gets steals at a decent rate, but doesn't rebound well, even for his position.
Cap Considerations
Bradley will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.8 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Lakers could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $3.4 million. This should be enough to retain Bradley, since he settled for the minimum of $2.6 million in free agency in 2021. Alternatively, the Lakers could use their Mid-Level Exception to re-sign Bradley if he demands more than $3.4 million.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Bradley as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, Room MLE, or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Bradley only gets minimum offers.
Potential Teams: Lakers, Hawks, Hornets, Jazz, Clippers
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.9 million ($1.8 million cap hit) with the Lakers
