Summary

Young brings most of his value on the defensive end, as he's a versatile defender who can guard multiple positions. Young has always been great at getting steals, finishing in the 79th percentile or better in steal rate for each season of his career, per Cleaning the Glass, and he does it without being someone that gambles a lot on defense. He's not as athletic as he was when he was younger, but he still moves pretty well and he's someone you can trust guarding out on the perimeter. He's also big enough to guard multiple positions.

Although he came into the league as a wing, he's transitioned to being more of a big at this stage of his career. He's even been playing some center for the Bulls this season, especially since the bigs in their rotation have really struggled with injuries. That might be his best position in today's NBA, as Young as never been a consistent three point shooter, so playing him at center allows teams to put four shooters around him.

Cap Considerations

Young's $14.2 million salary for 2021-2022 is partially-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Bulls will have no form of Bird rights on him. The Bulls may waive Young in order to maximize their cap space. However, the 2021 free agency class is looking less spectacular than it once did, so the Bulls may end up keeping Young. Also, keep in mind that last year the Knicks waived Elfrid Payton and were able to bring him back at a lower number, so the Bulls could try to do the same if they don't think he's worth the $14 million.

If Young becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could possibly use either of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE to sign him.

Potential Teams: Bulls, Mavericks, Jazz, Pelicans, Hawks

Predicted Contract: Not waived: $14.2 million

If waived: 3-year, $30 million with the Mavericks

Actual Contract: Not waived: $14.2 million
Young's contract was guaranteed and he was traded to San Antonio as part of the Demar Derozan sign-and-trade.
