Summary
The former Clippers' second round pick has failed to make an impact in his first four seasons, bouncing around along the way. Thornwell has good size for a point guard, but just doesn't have the ball skills to lead an offense in any way. He's not someone you want initiating offense or running a lot of pick-and-rolls. He also hasn't developed his outside shooting enough to be a true threat off the ball either.
On defense, Thornwell is solid and can use his size to put some pressure on guards, but he's not an elite defender by any means, which he would need to be in order to make up for his lack of offensive game. Teams are still giving Thornwell flyers, but those may not last long.
Cap Considerations
Thornwell was waived by the Pelicans this season, and although he subsequently signed a couple 10-day contracts with New Orleans, and later Orlando, it doesn't look like he will finish the season on an NBA roster. Teams will have multiple ways to sign Thornwell as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Thornwell could be signed for the minimum.
Potential Teams: Kings, Pelicans, Thunder, Knicks, Rockets
Predicted Contract: $1.8 million (non-guaranteed) with the Kings
