Summary
Snell quietly had a lights-out shooting performance for the Hawks this season, leading the league in three-point percentage at 59%. He also hasn't missed a free throw in two years. However, Snell has missed some games and wasn't exactly letting it fly when he was playing, so I'm not sure how much weight teams will put on this season when they think about him as a potential free agent signing. However, Snell has been over 40% for the last five seasons, so he has a track record of knocking down shots at a good rate.
Defensively, Snell is fine and has good length, but I wouldn't call him a lockdown defender by any means. I think Snell is a solid rotational player in the regular season, but maybe someone you wouldn't want to have to trust when the games matter the most, evidenced by his lack of playoff minutes for the Hawks this season. I think there's enough to get him more than a minimum contract, but I still wouldn't be surprised if he has to settle for the minimum.
Cap Considerations
Snell will be an unrestricted free agent with a $18.3 million cap hold and full Bird rights. Since the Hawks will be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Snell's Bird rights, and have no restrictions on re-signing him.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Snell as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. There's also a chance that Snell ends up settling for the minimum.
Potential Teams: Nuggets, Heat, Jazz, 76ers, Spurs
Predicted Contract: 2-year, $7.5 million with the Nuggets
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.4 million ($1.7 million cap hit) with the Trailblazers
It was probably foolish to think Snell would get more than the minimum considering he hasn't proven to be worth playoff minutes, but I thought his shooting ability would at least get him some interest for regular season minutes.
