Summary
The Hawks had to rely on Hill more than they expected when they signed him to a one-year minimum contract last offseason. Due to injuries to De'Andre Hunter, Danilo Gallinari, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Kris Dunn, Hill had to play more minutes during the regular season. His role on offense is almost exclusively as a spotup shooter, as over 67% of his attempts come from three, according to Cleaning the Glass. However, he only shot 33% from three, which won't cut it as a legitimate threat from outside.
Hill also doesn't have the athleticism to be a good finisher at the rim, and only shot above-average at the rim once in his career (as expected, it was the year before he earned the one big contract he got in 2016). Hill only got a non-guaranteed minimum contract last offseason, and while he fared okay for the Hawks this season, I don't think he showed anything that indicates he deserves more than that when he hits free agency at age 30 this summer.
Cap Considerations
Hill will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.7 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. This means that the highest starting salary the Hawks could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $2.9 million. This should be enough to retain Hill, since he settled for the minimum of $2.2 million to come to Atlanta. Alternatively, the Hawks could use their Mid-Level Exception or Bi-Annual Exception to re-sign Hill if he demands more than $2.9 million.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Hill as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. It's also likely that Hill only gets minimum offers.
Potential Teams: Hawks, Nuggets, Nets, Clippers, 76ers
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.4 million (non-guaranteed) with the Hawks
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.4 million ($1.7 million cap hit) with the Hawks
Hill re-signed with Atlanta on another 1-year minimum contract. He likely won't get as many minutes as he did last season, unless the Hawks suffer similar injury woes as last year.
