Summary
Satoransky lost his starting spot to Coby White this year, pushing him back to the familiar bench role that he experienced in Washington. That's probably the best role for Satoransky, as his offensive limitations probably make him a little overmatched as a starting caliber player.
Satoransky has never had a high usage rate, with a below-average usage rate for his position each season of his career, according to Cleaning the Glass. He shoots a decent percentage from outside, but the volume isn't high enough to be a real threat from out there. He finishes well at the rim, but isn't someone that puts a lot of pressure on the defense through his attack. He has good vision and some playmaking skills, but doesn't create enough advantages either off the dribble or out of pick-and-roll to utilize those skills very frequently. That's why he has always been better in transition than in the halfcourt.
Satoransky could get decent backup point guard money, but I wouldn't expect much more than that. As Satoransky came into the league at age 25, he's a little on the older size. He'll turn 30 in the '21-'22 season, so that may deflate his market a little bit as well.
Cap Considerations
Satoransky has $5 million of his $10 million salary for 2021-2022 guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Bulls will have no form of Bird rights on him.
The Bulls may waive Satoransky in order to maximize their cap space. However, the 2021 free agency class is looking less spectacular than it once did, so the Bulls may end up keeping Satoransky. Also, keep in mind that last year the Knicks waived Elfrid Payton and were able to bring him back at a lower number, so the Bulls could try to do the same if they don't think he's worth the $10 million.
If Satoransky becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could possibly use either of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE to sign him.
Potential Teams: Bulls, Hawks, Clippers, Nuggets, Pelicans, Trailblazers
Predicted Contract: Not waived: $10 million
If waived: 2-year, $10 million with the Hawks
Actual Contract: Not waived: $10 million
Satoransky's contract was guaranteed and he was traded to New Orleans as part of the Lonzo Ball sign-and-trade.
