Summary
I was surprised that Rose finished the '19-'20 season with the Pistons, as I thought he would be traded to a team in more of a win-now situation. However, it seems that the Pistons' asking price for Rose was too high, and they later ended up trading him to New York for Dennis Smith, Jr. and a decent second round pick.
Rose had a really nice year in '19-'20, despite not shooting well from outside. After his three point shooting dipped down to 29% in '19-'20, he shot 39% this past season, the same as his career-high rate in his last season in Minnesota in '18-'19.
Rose didn't finish as well at the rim this season, which could be concerning, but the sample size may not be enough to make much of, considering that Rose has finished in the 75% percentile or better for his position on shots at the rim since '17-'18, per Cleaning the Glass. His midrange shooting continued to be effective this season.
Rose may not be the athlete he was in his prime days in Chicago, but he still has enough quickness to get in the lane, and has enough touch inside to finish over defenders. Rose can certainly be a spark-plug scorer off the bench that could use some additional offense. In the playoffs, he was maybe the one Knick that could reliably create off the dribble.
Cap Considerations
Rose will be an unrestricted free agent with a $10 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Since his cap hold is likely above his market value, his cap hold really isn't that relevant, as the Knicks will either let him walk in order to maximize their cap space, or they will re-sign Rose and cut into some of their space.
The Knicks could offer Rose a starting salary of up to $13.4 million using the Early Bird exception, which is likely more than enough should they wish to bring him back. If it's not, the Knicks could always use cap space to re-sign him.
If Rose demands a starting salary of more than the full $9.5 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him, unless a sign-and-trade is worked out. It is possible that Rose could be had for the full MLE or slightly less.
Potential Teams: Knicks, Mavericks, Bulls, Heat, Trailblazers
Predicted Contract: 2-year, $19.5 million with the Knicks
Actual Contract: 3-year, $43.6 million (team option) with the Knicks
Almost every Knick free agent got significantly more than I expected, and Rose is no exception.
