Summary
Roby got quite a bit of time for the Thunder this season, even starting 34 games, but considering a decent chuck of that time was during the Thunder's tanktastic race to the bottom, it's hard to evaluate Roby's play. Roby is a bouncy big that has decent hands and some ball skills, but hasn't really put together the full package to be effective. He can stretch the floor, but only hit 31% from three this season. He was effective from the corners, but nowhere else, thus leading to an eFG% of 52%, well below average for a big. He also doesn't rebound very well for a big on either end.
Despite only being 6'8", I'm not sure Roby is best suited to play power forward, since he can't really provide rim protection on defense, and isn't quite skilled enough to be a full-time power forward. He did play there quite a bit next to Moses Brown at center during the latter parts of OKC's season, but I don't think that's his best long-term fit.
Cap Considerations
Roby's $1.8 million salary for 2021-2022 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Thunder will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract doesn't fit within the minimum salary exception as it was a four-year contract.
If Roby becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could possibly use either of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE to sign him. However, I don't expect any offers for Roby to be above the minimum.
Potential Teams: Thunder, Pistons, Hornets, Knicks, Raptors
Predicted Contract: Not waived: $1.7 million
If waived: 1-year, $1.7 million with the Raptors
Actual Contract: Not waived: $1.7 million
As expected, Roby's contract was guaranteed by the Thunder.
