Summary
After struggling to contribute with the Celtics in the '19-'20 season, Kanter was traded to Portland and has gotten back to his usual level of contribution. Kanter rebounds really well on both ends of the court, which is his main skill. Despite having nice touch, he actually has shot below average at the rim for each of the past three seasons, per Cleaning the Glass. However, he is able to hit enough short-midrange shots to have an above-average eFG%. He's a bit overmatched as a starting center, mostly due to his defensive deficiencies, but he's actually worked hard to survive on that end in recent years.

In a league where backup bigs of similar value can get anywhere from a non-guaranteed minimum to the full MLE, Kanter's market is difficult to value. I think there's a chance that Kanter ends up settling for the minimum for the first time in his career. Kanter and his agent will likely fight hard to get above the minimum, not only for the obvious goal of more money, but also because it can often be difficult to break the perception of being a minimum player once you're labeled as one.

Cap Considerations
Kanter will be an unrestricted free agent with a $6.5 million cap hold and Early Bird rights. Using his Early Bird rights, the Trailblazers can offer Kanter a starting salary of 5% above the average salary (around $10 million), which should be more than enough.

Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Kanter as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. There's also a chance that Kanter ends up settling for the minimum.

Potential Teams: Trailblazers, Wizards, Hornets, Kings, Raptors

Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.7 million cap hit) with the Trailblazers.

Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.7 million cap hit) with the Celtics.

Kanter signed for the minimum as expected, but I was surprised he signed with Boston considering they already had Al Horford and Robert Williams at center.
