Summary
The #27 pick in 2019, Kabengele's career got off to a tough start as the Clippers declined the team option on the third year of his rookie contract, and he was waived after being traded to Sacramento. Kabengele eventually signed with the Cavs on a multi-year deal, but he could be waived this summer as his salary is non-guaranteed for next season.
Kabengele played decently for the Cavs, but it's hard to evaluate him considering the Cavs were in heavy tank mode by the time they added him. If he can develop his offensive skills and feel a little bit, Kabengele could be a versatile small-ball big.
Cap Considerations
Kabengele's $1.7 million salary for 2021-2022 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Cavaliers will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract doesn't fit within the minimum salary exception as it was a three-year contract.
If Kabengele becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could possibly use either of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE to sign him. However, I don't expect any offers for Kabengele to be above the minimum.
Potential Teams: Nuggets, Cavaliers, Pistons, Thunder, Bulls
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.7 million (non-guaranteed) with the Nuggets.
