Summary
Green has shot 39% from three or better each of the past three seasons, and has shown he can provide value as a stretch big that can come off the bench but still potentially close games. Although Green does not provide much else besides spotup shooting, having a big with this skillset can be valuable, and Green should have some real interest as a free agent this summer.
Back in 2020 when the Clippers were upset by the Nuggets, a lot of talk centered around Green needing to play more minutes than he did. While some of that was more about the struggles of Montrezl Harrell than anything Green actually did, it should actually help his market this summer, despite not exactly lighting it up with the Nuggets in the playoffs.
Green didn't seem to have a ton of interest from teams last offseason, but should be a target for teams looking for a reliable stretch big on a reasonable contract.
Cap Considerations
Green has a $7.7 million player option for next season, and if he declines that option he will be an unrestricted free agent with an $8.8 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights. If Green opts for free agency, the Nuggets will be somewhat limited in their means of re-signing him. Since they will only have his Non-Bird Rights, the most they could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is a contract starting at $8.8 million. This should be enough to re-sign Green, but since the Nuggets will have limited resources to replace Green if he leaves, he may be able to use that as leverage to get the full amount allowed under the Non-Bird Exception.
If Green opts out, he would most likely demand a starting salary of more than his option amount of $7.7 million, so interested teams would need to either have cap space or use most of the full $9.5 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception. If he wants more than that from an over-the-cap team, sign-and-trade options can be explored.
Potential Teams: Nuggets, Hawks, Nets, Pelicans, Knicks
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $8.8 million with the Nuggets
Actual Contract: 2-year, $16.4 million (player option) with the Nuggets
Green got a similar contract to what I expected, but got a little less than the Nuggets could offer using full Non-Bird Rights. Green did give him a player option for the second year, and he also got $200k in unlikely incentives that can push his salary up a bit.
