Summary
James has got some playing time over the past two seasons, but for the most part he hasn't played a lot other than garbage time. He has some scoring ability, but doesn't have an elite skill. He's a good shooter, but not a great shooter, and the sample size of his attempts is too small to make much out of, especially since he doesn't have a lot of G-League games to point to either.
James is listed at 6'7", but looks smaller than that when he plays, and he doesn't rebound at all. James has had some decent games, especially later in this past season, but he probably hasn't proven enough to get a fully-guaranteed offer.
Cap Considerations
James's $1.8 million salary for 2021-2022 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Kings will have no form of Bird rights on him. If he is waived, teams could claim him off waivers, but would need to fit his salary within cap space or an exception to do so, as his contract doesn't fit within the minimum salary exception as it was a three-year contract.
If James becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could possibly use either of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE to sign him. However, I don't expect any offers for James to be above the minimum.
Potential Teams: Thunder, Pistons, Kings, Knicks, Magic
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.7 million (non-guaranteed) with the Thunder
Actual Contract: 1-year, Two-Way contract with the Jazz
James was only able to get a two-way contract with Utah, but was waived early in training camp.
