Summary
Despite lighting it up from three this season at 45%, Galloway struggled to get consistent minutes with the Suns, and was not in the rotation in the playoffs. Since Galloway doesn't do much besides hit outside shots, he may not be a rotational player on a great team. Similar to guys like Wayne Ellington or Troy Daniels, strictly shooters often seem valuable in theory but often lose minutes to more well-rounded players.
At 6'2", Galloway is small for a shooting guard, which hurts him defensively, and makes it hard to play him with another small guard. He's never been a point guard on offense, so playing him next to just wings hasn't been explored much in the past either. I loved the Galloway signing by the Suns last offseason, and would be willing to give Galloway a little more than the minimum if I were making the decisions for an NBA team. However, since Galloway settled for the minimum last offseason and hasn't shown enough to prove he's worth more than that this season, I expect him to be on minimum contracts for the rest of his career.
Cap Considerations
Galloway will be an unrestricted free agent with a $1.7 million cap hold and Non-Bird Rights This means that the highest starting salary the Suns could offer him using the Non-Bird Exception is $2.7 million. This should be enough to retain Johnson, since he settled for the minimum of $2 million to come to Phoenix. Alternatively, the Suns could use their Mid-Level Exception to re-sign Galloway if he demands more than $2.7 million.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Galloway as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. Since he signed a minimum contract this offseason, teams will hope to get him at the minimum next summer too.
Potential Teams: Suns, Pelicans, Celtics, Bucks, Nets
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.2 million ($1.7 million cap hit) with the Suns
Actual Contract: 1-year, $2.2 million (non-guaranteed) with the Warriors
I was surprised that Galloway was only able to get a training camp deal with the Warriors, and he may struggle to make the final roster.
