Summary

Dort started his rookie year on a two-way contract with the Thunder. During that season, he agreed to a full NBA contract that ended up being about as team-friendly as it could have been. Dort's contract was essentially a four-year minimum deal, with some partial-guarantees on the back end, and importantly a team option on the fourth year. That allows the Thunder to decline that option and have Dort enter restricted free agency in 2022, rather than unrestricted free agency in 2023.

I get why Dort signed it, it's legitimate money for a guy who went undrafted and had no guarantees he would stick around in the NBA. However, Dort should still be able to cash in in 2022 if he continues his current play. He's an absolute brick house on defense, and if he continues shooting over 40% from three, he could be one of the best 3-and-D wings in the league, with the potential to become an All-Star if he improves his off-the-dribble game.

Cap Considerations

Dort has a $1.7 million contract that is only $300k guaranteed. The Thunder aren't going to waive Dort, so I'm not going to waste your time discussing his free agency options, as he will not hit free agency in 2021.

Potential Teams: Thunder

Predicted Contract: Not waived ($1.7 million)

Actual Contract: Not waived ($1.7 million)

This was a no-brainer for OKC, and they even guaranteed his salary much earlier than they needed to.
