Summary
Danny Green got a lot of hate during the Lakers championship run. Some of that was warranted, as Green did miss a lot of open shots. For someone like Green that doesn't do a whole lot offensively besides shoot 3s, it certainly hurts his value when he's not hitting at a high rate. However, I do think Green could more hate than he deserved. I believe Green is one of those players whose impact goes beyond just what shows up in the stat sheet, and many people don't understand his impact or notice everything he does well. I know playing next to Kawhi Leonard and Lebron James is the biggest factor, but I also don't think it's a complete coincidence that Green played for two championship teams in a row, and was on a contender this year as well.
On defense, Green isn't a lockdown perimeter defender, and has probably lost a step or two due to age, but he's still a solid defender on-ball and overall makes the right rotations. He has always been one of the best fastbreak defenders in the league.
On offense, he may go cold through stretches, but he doesn't take bad shots, and overall knows how to make the right basketball play. Green's shooting declines are certainly concerning, and I wouldn't want to give him a long-term contract considering he'll be 35 this summer, but if I were a team trying to contend, I would certainly be interested in trying to acquire him.
Cap Considerations
Green will be an unrestricted free agent with a $23 million cap hold and full Bird rights. Since the 76ers will be operating over the salary cap, they will retain Green's Bird rights, and have no restrictions on re-signing him. However, the luxury tax could come into play, as re-signing Green could push the 76ers deep into the luxury tax. Re-signing Green could also prevent the 76ers from using the full Non-Taxpayer MLE, which they may prefer to do rather than re-sign Green and use the smaller Taxpayer MLE.
Therefore, other teams will have a legitimate shot at signing Green away from Philadelphia without having to make him a huge offer. If Green demands a starting salary of more than the full $9.5 million Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception, only teams with cap space will be able to sign him, unless a sign-and-trade is worked out. It is possible that Green could be had for the full MLE.
Potential Teams: 76ers, Trailblazers, Knicks, Mavericks, Grizzlies
Predicted Contract: 2-year, $19.5 million with the 76ers
Actual Contract: 2-year, $20 million (2nd year non-guaranteed) with the 76ers
Green re-signed for close to full MLE money as expected, but his second year with Philadelphia is non-guaranteed.
