Summary
Burks has shown flashes of solid offensive play throughout his career, as getting to the rim and finishing as always been his primary skill. Unfortunately, when you look at Burks' finishing numbers, his field goal percentage for shots at the rim has been below average each year of his career, according to Cleaning the Glass, and this year he shot a dreadful 48% at the rim, which is in the bottom 9th percentile for his position.
Earlier in his career, Burks shot a decent percentage from three on a tiny number of attempts, but Burks has turned into a legitimate shooter from outside, hitting 40% over the last two seasons, including hitting some off-the-dribble. Despite the Knicks having a lot of depth at guard, Burks has been able to contribute for the Knicks this season played decently for the Knicks. He has some creation ability that is valuable for a bench wing, and has turned into a good enough shooter to be respected off the ball.
Cap Considerations
Burks will be an unrestricted free agent with a $7.2 million cap hold and Non-Bird rights. Since his cap hold is above his market value, his cap hold really isn't that relevant, as the Knicks will either let him walk in order to maximize their cap space, or they will re-sign Burks and cut into some of their space. Using his Non-Bird rights, the Knicks can offer Burks a starting salary of $7.2 million, which should be more than enough. If it's not, the Knicks could always use cap space to re-sign him.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Burks as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer, Taxpayer, or possibly even the Room Mid-Level Exceptions to sign him.
Potential Teams: Nuggets, Knicks, Grizzlies, Kings, Raptors
Predicted Contract: 2-year, $12.1 million with the Nuggets
Actual Contract: 3-year, $30 million (team option) with the Knicks
The Knicks' free agents all did better than I expected, partly due to the Knicks choosing to return their team rather than chasing some of the top free agents.
