Summary
I really did not understand giving Biyombo more than the minimum last season. It didn't really affect anything for the Hornets, who didn't even use all of their cap space, but I found it odd. If Biyombo truly had similar offers out there and the Hornets just wanted to keep him, then I guess I understand it, but I certainly wouldn't be going out of my way to give Biyombo more than the minimum.
It appears that Biyombo has improved his hands, as I've seen him catch several passes that I would not have expected based on past performance, but I would have to watch more film to assuredly say that his hands have really improved. Biyombo is fine as a decent rim protector and rim runner, but you can't expect much else from him. Backup bigs can always be found on the cheap, and I expect Biyombo to be included in this category. I don't expect Biyombo to get more than the minimum, but he could prove me wrong again.
Cap Considerations
Biyombo will be an unrestricted free agent with full Bird rights. As his cap hold ($6.7 million) exceeds the salary he will get in free agency, his cap hold is not really relevant. If the Hornets re-sign Biyombo, his cap hold will be replaced by his starting salary, and the Hornets may still have some cap space available depending on his salary and what happens with their other free agents. If Biyombo is brought back by the Hornets on a multi-year contract, they could benefit from frontloading his contract, as it could give them additional flexibility in the future.
Other teams will have multiple ways to sign Biyombo as even teams without cap space could possibly use any of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE or Bi-Annual Exception to sign him. There's also a chance that Biyombo could be signed for the minimum.
Potential Teams: Trailblazers, Hornets, Wizards, Raptors, Cavalier
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.7 million cap hit) with the Trailblazers
