Summary
Bacon has good size at the wing and can defend multiple positions, but offensively just hasn't developed enough to be above-replacement level. At 25 years old and four seasons in, it's getting less likely that Bacon will improve enough offensively to really make an impact. His shooting from outside is poor, and he takes too many pullup midrange jumpers. Outside of the '18-'19 season in which he shot 43% from three and 68% at the rim, Bacon has consistently finished in the bottom 10th of the league in eFG%, per Cleaning the Glass.
I think Bacon can make sense as an 11th or 12th man that can play some regular season minutes here and there when guys are injured, but if I were a team I would probably rather give that roster spot to a younger prospect.
Cap Considerations
Bacon's $1.8 million salary for 2021-2022 is non-guaranteed, and if he is waived he will become an unrestricted free agent and the Magic will have no form of Bird rights on him. The Magic will likely operate over the cap, so they won't get much of a benefit by waiving him, other than freeing up a roster spot. If he is waived, any team could claim him off waivers since he is on a minimum contract.
If Bacon becomes a free agent, other teams will have multiple ways to sign him as even teams without cap space could possibly use either of the Non-Taxpayer MLE, Taxpayer MLE, or possibly even the Room MLE to sign him. It's likely that Bacon ends up settling for the minimum.
Potential Teams: Bulls, Magic, Cavaliers, Heat, Spurs
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $1.8 million (non-guaranteed) with the Bulls
Actual Contract: 1-year, $1.8 million (non-guaranteed) with the Knicks
Bacon signed a minimum contract as expected, and was not able to get any guaranteed money.
