Summary
After sitting out most of the '18-'19 season, Smith was waived by the Cavaliers in July 2019 and did not sign another contract until signing with the Lakers for the bubble in Orlando. It seems the market is pretty dry for Smith, but if a team believes he can still hit shots at a solid rate, Smith could find himself back in the league on an actual contract next season.
Since Smith hasn't been able to get off the bench for the Lakers in the playoffs, I would be very surprised if any team offered him above the minimum and I would not be surprised if Smith found himself out of the league.
Cap Considerations
While Smith did sign a contract with Los Angeles as a replacement player in Orlando, the Lakers will not have any form of Bird rights for Smith. As such, Smith will enter free agency as if he never signed the contract with the Lakers. Smith is likely to only get offers at the minimum this offseason.
Potential Teams: Rockets, Lakers, 76ers, Thunder, Bills
Predicted Contract: 1-year, $2.6 million ($1.6 million cap hit) with the Rockets
Actual Contract: N/A
As of the start of the regular season, Smith remains unsigned, and it looks like his memorable NBA career may be over.
